The Arrival Scene from Glass Onion is Dissected by Rian Johnson

Action, camera, light! The director of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Rian Johnson, spoke with Vanity Fair for the Notes on a Scene series and broke down the "arrival" scene, in which Daniel Craig's detective Benoit Blanc meets the eccentric billionaire Miles Bron, played by Edward Norton, and his "douchey friends," Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), Claire Debella (Kathryn Ha

According to Johnson, the star-studded cast's initial get-together was "day one, shot one" for the popular sequel, which had its limited theatrical release on November 23 and is now streaming on Netflix. The new colour scheme in Glass Onion, as opposed to the "cosy brown, New England sweaters" of the first Knives Out, Johnson claims, is "the blues and yellows of summer in Greece with lovely swimwear."

Regarding the subsequent movies in the Knives Out series, Johnson adds, "We're going to have them be totally fresh deals every single time." Johnson credits his love of Agatha Christie, the "original source of [his] inspiration for all of this," for his choice to have each movie take place in a wholly distinct universe. She approached each one with a completely different mental framework. She was attempting plot twists and turns, according to Johnson. From the beginning, she was deviating from the genre's conventions.

Johnson described how he collaborated with costume designer Jenny Eagan to develop ensemble cast costumes that were "different as players in a game of Clue, but also appearing like somebody who would be wandering around in the real world" in order to capture the atmosphere of the Glass Onion. As a result, although Hahn's politician was dressed in significantly less spectacular apparel, Hudson's former fashion It girl was dressed in fabulous colours.

Johnson sighs and says, "Poor Kathryn. "When Kathryn arrived, she announced, "I'm in a Benoit Blanc mystery, and everyone wears fantastic costumes. It's going to be fantastic. When she arrives, she walks through the clothing racks and notices Kate's rack with its shimmering colours and Daniel's rack with all of these gorgeous dresses. Then she comes to her rack, and as you can see, I told Jenny Eagan to make it "beige," he continues. I only wanted her to wear gloomy tans and beige. I wanted it to sound like the movie's outfits' melancholy trumpet noise.

Masks were one component of the costume that significantly aided in character development. "In 2020, I wrote this film. The fact that it takes place on a Greek island is probably in part because I wrote it while the school was on lockdown, according to Johnson. I wanted to be on a Greek island that was beginning to fade. Johnson vowed that Glass Onion isn't a mask movie, but he felt driven by the idea that "people's personalities can be defined depending on their choice of maskwear." In order to do this, according to Johnson, he dressed Hahn in a—you guessed it—beige mask, Odom Jr.'s scientist Lionel in "a very appropriate, N95 mask," and Craig's sophisticated detective in "a dapper mask that's coordinated to his attire."

Hudson's Birdie, whose fashionable chain-link mask had holes all over it and made Johnson laugh particularly hard, was Johnson's favourite mask—or lack thereof. I believe we have all encountered this individual, he claims. She says, 'I'm trying,' I'm hidden. What would you like?
