According to the Florida police chief, during an Orlando traffic check, an officer fatally shot a man who moved quickly.

 Orland, Florida - Police shot and killed a man in downtown Orlando early on Monday after he refused their orders after they noticed drugs in his car, according to the police chief.

"The officers were doing a drug investigation, and basically the person— the suspect— made a quick movement to, as to retrieve a firearm, and the shooting happened," Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said during a news conference. "I am aware that drugs were observed, which is why officers stopped and examined the individual,"

No weapon was discovered, he claimed. The local hospital declared the man deceased.

The officer was carrying a body camera during the 2 a.m. interaction, according to Smith, who has watched the tape. Within 30 days, the video will be made public, according to the police.

While the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts its investigation, the officer was placed on paid administrative leave.
