(AP) SEATTLE — Brock Purdy, a former quarterback for Iowa State and a rookie quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, never questioned that he would enter the game with a chance to win the division.
Kyle Shanahan, the coach for San Francisco, wondered all night long how long Purdy would be able to play through his oblique injury.
Shanahan explained, "We were going to see how long he'd survive and we were prepared to go with (backup) Josh (Johnson). But as the game progressed, he simply grew more at ease and improved. It's really hard to believe.
The 49ers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 21-13 on Thursday night to claim the NFC West title for the first time since 2019 because to two touchdown throws from Purdy to George Kittle.
The 49ers (10-4) continued to demonstrate they might be the class of the NFC alongside Philadelphia despite utilising their third starting quarterback this year. With its oppressive defence, San Francisco has won seven games in a row, frustrating Seattle into making several errors.
The rookie quarterback for the Niners made a few big plays despite having little practise time before to the game and without throwing a single pass.
"I entered this location with the intention of playing and getting things going. That's all there was, Purdy said.
Purdy, who was playing on the road for the first time in his career, completed all 11 of his passes. This included a 28-yard touchdown pass to Kittle in the first quarter, which he completed after pulling off two fakes and finding an open tight end.
The play, titled "Hollywood," was flawlessly performed.
"Whenever Kyle dials anything up, you try to speak it into existence because you know you're going to receive the ball. So you had to say, "Touchdown,' picture it in your head, and it was literally flawless," said Kittle.
Early in the second half, Purdy and Kittle connected once more as Seattle's defence botched a coverage, leaving Kittle wide open for a 54-yard touchdown and a 21-3 San Francisco lead. Aaron Rodgers and Purdy are the only quarterbacks since at least 1950 to post at least a 115 passer rating in each of their first two starts. Purdy finished 17 of 26 for 217 yards.
Since I last played four days ago, Purdy admitted, "even though I haven't tossed a ball, I have been playing." "I now understand where men should be. I am familiar with the feeling of ripping a ball in time and with rhythm.
Christian McCaffrey ran for 108 yards and a 1-yard touchdown in the closing minute of the first half after Seattle committed a turnover. Kittle had four catches for 93 yards.
Seattle (7-7) suffered a fourth straight defeat, further harming its playoff chances. Geno Smith was under constant pressure as he completed passes for 238 yards and Seattle's first offensive touchdown of the year against the 49ers.
After Robbie Gould missed a 43-yard field goal attempt and the Seahawks covered 67 yards in just under two minutes, Seattle closed the gap to one touchdown late in the fourth quarter. With 3:35 left, Smith found Noah Fant for a 10-yard touchdown. However, Purdy made a scrambled third-and-1 conversion before the two-minute warning, and Jordan Mason's 55-yard run with 1:02 left to play secured the victory.
"I'm not sure if I'm using all the appropriate terminology. Smith replied, "But man, I just hate losing and have to figure it out.
Nine hits and three sacks were delivered to Smith. There were few open windows for his pass catchers when he did have time to throw. Seattle only one play longer than 20 yards, and late in the game, wide receiver Tyler Lockett broke a bone in his hand.
Late in the first half, the 49ers made a mistake that Seattle could have profited from.
Against the 49ers, Seattle scored their first offensive points in two games midway through the second quarter on a 38-yard field goal by Jason Myers.
Seattle only scored once in the first game of Week 2 thanks to a blocked field goal that was eventually returned for a touchdown.
However, the Seahawks made two crucial errors after that. Quandre Diggs missed a chance to intercept the pass, which would have put Seattle's possession of the ball on the San Francisco side of the field. With 1:08 remaining in the second quarter, Travis Homer fumbled after being hit hard by Dre Greenlaw at the Seattle 41. Charvarius Ward recovered the ball and returned it 35 yards. Two plays later, McCaffrey scored to give the 49ers a 14-3 advantage.
In each game of their winning streak, the 49ers have given up 17 points or fewer.
49ers defensive end Nick Bosa said, "I believe just from the first time we faced them we knew we had an advantage, and we were going to have to take full advantage of it. We certainly performed as expected.
